Quick Tip: How To Make a Revolver More Accurate

Brownells Gun Tech™ Steve Ostrem talks with our friend Bobby Tyler of Tyler Gun Works about revolver accuracy. Bobby's shop does a lot of revolver accurizing, so the question is: How do you make a revolver more accurate? Most important is to tune the action - the hammer, trigger, cylinder, and the timing. You need a clean hammer break, the trigger should not have too much overtravel, and when the cylinder is in the locked position, the chamber should line up perfectly with the forcing cone and the bore. The barrel-cylinder gap should be kept to a bare minimum, .003" to .004", to prevent excess loss of gas that will harm bullet velocity. Also VERY important to accuracy is the bullet's final contact point with the barrel, so Bobby's crew puts a target crown on their custom revolvers. The target crown also protects the exit hole from damage if you drop the gun. So if your budget is a bit tight but you still want to tighten up the accuracy of your revolver, Bobby recommends going for an action job and an accuracy package, which'll address all these critical areas and leave a little money left for ammo to cover the other critical aspect of revolver accuracy: practice at the range.
