In the summer of 2011, the Indian Army conducted a daring cross-border raid, code-named Operation Ginger, in retaliation for a Pakistani attack on an Indian Army post in Kupwara. The Indian Army planned and executed Operation Ginger with great secrecy and precision. A team of elite commandos was tasked with infiltrating into Pakistani territory and carrying out a raid on three Pakistani Army posts in the Sharda sector, across the Neelam river valley in Kel.

On the night of August 30, 2011, the Indian commandos crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and attacked the Pakistani Army posts. The commandos killed 13 Pakistani soldiers and beheaded three of them. The commandos also brought back the rank insignias of the three Pakistani soldiers as
