I had a Ranger Student came through right after graduation. I asked him about his squad and what made the difference, what helped them actually make it to the end. He said a lot of people just focus on themselves, on what they can do. But for him, it was about the relationships inside the squad.
They lost one guy in Darby and another good dude busted his ankle going into Mountains. Other than that, they had pretty much the same squad the whole time.
I asked if they had known each other before Ranger. He said no, none of them had met before but somehow, it clicked. They were all good guys, and they figured it out as they went along.

There was a mix—guys straight out of BOLC, a couple from Regiment, two armor guys, and a captain starting the Q Course. One of the guys had come from 5th Group- Special Forces. Being able to pull from different people’s backgrounds and experience helped a lot. Some guys were writing the OPORDs, the Regiment guys were going nuts on the guns. He said it made a huge difference—night and day.
