Sir Kenneth Branagh celebrates his sixtieth birthday Thursday (10 DECEMBER 2020).
The actor and director was born in 1960 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, though his family moved to England when he was a child.  He acted in school plays and went on to study at he Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
Branagh excelled in Shakespeare plays including Adrian Noble's RSC production of "Henry V."  The versatile actor adapted this production for a movie version, and formed the Renaissance Theatre Company, which staged Shakespeare plays with stars including Dame Judi Dench, Samantha Bond and Sophie Thompson.
Branagh has directed plays as diverse as "The Winter's Tale," "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Play What I Wrote" both in London's West End and on Broadway.  He is actor-manager of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre, which staged a number of plays starring Lily James, Rob Brydon, Derek Jacobi and Richard Madden.
Meanwhile, the actor's film career has been similarly diverse, with roles in a number of Shakespeare adaptations, as well as appearances in blockbusters including "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," "Valkyrie" and "Dunkirk," among many others.
As director, Branagh took on "Thor" and Disney's live action adaptation of "Cinderella."  He also directed and starred in Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" and the upcoming "Death on the Nile."
He has also starred in a number of TV movies and series including Antarctic expedition saga "Shackleton" and crime drama "Wallander."
Branagh has been nominated for an Oscar five times, including two for Best Actor and Best Director for "Henry V."  He received a nod for best supporting actor for his role as Laurence Olivier in "My Week With Marilyn" in 2011.
He was knighted in the 2012 Birthday Honours.  
Branagh was married to fellow actor Emma Thompson in 1989.  The couple divorced in 1995, and Branagh had a relationship with Helena Bonham Carter.  He married Lindsay Brunnock in 2003.
