Phantasy Star was released in 1987 developed by Sega. It is the first in a long line of Phantasy Star games, and is often considered one of the best games for the Sega Master System.

An unusual blend of fantasy and sci-fi, Phantasy Star broke the mold of games of that era first and foremost by featuring a female lead who was not sexualized in any way, nor was any special attention even given to the fact that she was a woman.

Phantasy Star was similar to Dragon Quest, except that all enemies were animated and beautiful 3D mazes were developed that outclassed anything else at the time.

The FM soundtrack of the Japanese version (sadly absent from the official English release) was fun and enjoyable, and the on-cart battery meant that - like Zelda on NES, - players could simply continue on later where they left off without having to enter lengthy passwords.
