Google is currently the most useful (and most used) search engine on the Internet, but it hasn't always been this way - and will it continue to be? More important: should it continue to be? When Google introduced its Panda algorithm - designed to weed out the spam sites and content thieves, but in effect punishing a lot of legitimate content providers in the process - people's livelihoods were suddenly threatened with little warning. Should Google really have the power to redirect the flow of the Internet so dramatically as it sees fit? Matt Ryan investigates alternative, peer-to-peer, open source search engine YaCy and wonders if its approach might signify a new direction in the evolution of search engines to come.
