Kristi Noem will be replaced as the Secretary of Homeland Security by Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin was elected in a special election to serve the remainder of the term of the late Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., who retired midterm in 2023. Mullin served in the House before his election to the Senate and was first elected in 2012. During his Senate tenure, Mullin has been a steadfast Trump ally and a top communicator for the Republican caucus. Mullin frequently holds court with reporters in the Senate hallways and is a regular on network television shows and cable news. In other words, Markwayne Mullin is Kristi Noem with 2 first names.

Kristi Noem may be out at the top of the Department of Homeland Security, but Democrats are still demanding a “reckoning.” And a proper dragging. The content dominated the timeline for the past 24 hours.

Democrats met news of Noem’s ouster Thursday with a cascade of calls for accountability. They ranged from a potential probe into the legality of contracts cut during her tenure to a perjury investigation after her congressional testimony to even a push for impeachment to keep her from holding public office in the future.

Democrats vowed to probe Noem’s time as homeland security secretary if they took back power in the November midterm elections, while at least two congressional candidates called for a future criminal prosecution.
