Today, Christian dives into the TAG Heuer Carrera 160th Anniversary Edition. A limited edition watch, this model is designed to celebrate the brand's 160th anniversary. In 1962, Jack Heuer, founder of the brand, was inspired by the Carrera Panamericana, an incredibly dangerous race in Mexico that only ran for four years. To commemorate this, in 1963, he released the 2447, a 36mm chronograph powered by the manual winding caliber Valjoux 72, and named it after this race. To this day, the collection remains a staple.

This modern version is 39mm, a few steps up from the 36mm of the original. The dial is plated in silver, giving it a wholly unique aesthetic that changes color from deep grey to bright sunburst silver. It features faux patina which can be a subject of controversy, but it ultimately is just a matter of taste. It is powered by the Heuer 02 caliber, an automatic movement which helps to expand on the notion that this watch is a celebration of where the brand is now, as much as it is a celebration of where they came from. Of course, they reissued the 2447 once before in 1996, when they were in a bit of a crossroads of brand identity, and now they've done it again, but differently in a way that makes this model stand out as something unique within their line.
