The Petrushka Project is an unprecedented international live concert and commissioning initiative presented by Schott Music, boasting premieres of 75 solo piano pieces by a wide range of composers around the world. The Project affords a rare and unique opportunity for the infusion of a huge variety of new piano works into the international repertoire. Composers from 26 countries took part in Petrushka Project 2012, and the Project will be continued in the coming years.

"The brief cycle of variations on a Ländler by Schubert was composed in the autumn of 2011 as a contribution to the Schott Petrushka Project 2012. As my small-scale commissions regularly turn out to be on the over-large size, I resolved to make a virtue of necessity and simply write a really big piece en miniature. The witticism of this cycle is that despite its brief duration of only 5 minutes (or a mere three and a half minutes without repeats), it is nevertheless a full-blown set of variations possessing all the significant characteristics of this form. The dance-like element of the A minor theme fades away progressively up to the dramatic funeral march in the fourth variation, only to reappear in the last variation which returns to the original Schubert but now in A major and in a slower tempo, creating a bitter-sweet timbre which even surpasses the typical Schubert sound."(Stefan Heucke)
