China's state security authorities have revealed details of a major espionage case:

A man surnamed Hao was recruited as a spy while pursuing his PhD. During the process of applying for a visa to attend an academic conference abroad, he was approached by a foreign embassy official, identified as T, who initiated contact. Over time, the two developed a closer relationship. Citing the high cost of living for overseas students, T introduced Hao to part-time job opportunities to earn extra money and later brought in a colleague, L, to assist.

Before Hao returned to China after graduation, L revealed his identity as a spy and successfully recruited Hao.

After returning to China, Hao—following instructions from the foreign side—managed to gain employment at a classified institution. He repeatedly provided intelligence to foreign agents and received payments in return.

An official assessment determined that Hao passed on intelligence concerning sensitive national projects and internal personnel at a central government department. This included five pieces of classified (confidential-level) state secrets and two pieces of secret-level state secrets.

Hao was ultimately convicted of espionage, sentenced to life imprisonment, and stripped of his political rights for life.
