So the virus is extremely important but there are other news items and someof them involve you long term survival….the environment. There is what is being called a “megadrought” gripping the western United States. It is the wrose drought in 500 years, and scientists say it’s the first to be influenced by human-caused climate change.



That is the word from a study published this week in the Journal Science. A mega-drought is one that is a severe droughts typically lasting a couple of decades at least.

The most recent drought is gripping a wide swath of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, and has been ongoing since around 2000. That’s longer than any drought event that occurred during the 20th century.



Bringing me to our slay word EXECRABLE for extremely bad or unpleasant. Can you imagine what an execrable situation this will be for your children long term? Time to make changes.

The research is led by Park Williams of Columbia University. He studied tree rings in makinghis findings because tree rings tell you a lot about past climate conditions. This tree ring data goes all the way back to A.D. 800, and it shows there have been a handful of extreme megadroughts over the last 1,200 years. Park Williams says “We now have enough observations of current drought and tree-ring records of past drought to say that we’re on the same trajectory as the worst prehistoric droughts”.

The severity of the current megadrought is second only to the last event, which occurred in the late 1500s. This drought is particularly bad because man-made warmer and drier conditions brought by climate change account for nearly half the severity of the current drought. In the past the mega-droughts in western North America were just as severe and even longer but with only natural climate cycles to blame. We’ve got a double whammy on us that we can only blame on ourselves. How the risk grows and how severe the droughts will be will likely depend on the level of future greenhouse gas emissions.
