Seven people died in two separate landslide incidents in Davao Oriental and Davao de Oro amid continuous rains that have affected the region since Wednesday.

Rescue operations were immediately launched after a landslide struck a house in Barangay Salazar, Mati City, Davao Oriental, on Friday morning. However, four members of a family, a couple and their two daughters, aged 5 and 13, were recovered dead.

Office of Civil Defense XI Director Ednar Dayanghirang said the house was located in a downtown area but was situated behind a slope that collapsed.

In a separate incident, three individuals died in a landslide in Barangay Rizal, Monkayo, Davao de Oro, on Thursday night. Several houses were also damaged.

Dayanghirang said numerous flooding and landslide incidents have been reported in Davao de Oro and Davao Oriental due to nonstop rains since Wednesday, brought about by the shear line.
Many families have been evacuated since Thursday due to the possible severe effects of the weather system.

In Laak, Davao de Oro, a portion of the road in Purok 7, Barangay Kiokmay, collapsed and was captured on video.

Meanwhile, in Mawab, Davao de Oro, several men were seen stepping on debris along the strong current of the Hijo River to retrieve washed-out coconuts and woods. Rescuers warned them to stop due to high risk and danger.

“Kung nasa lugar kayo na malapit sa river o mababang area, kailangan makinig kayo sa inyong barangay officials, municipal officials, sa inyong governor, kung magsabi preemptive evacuation, kailangan lumikas na ang lahat, lalo na ang bulubundukin na barangay na may mga landslide prone areas,” Dayanghirang said. — Report from Hernel Tocmo, ABS-CBN News
