Kate Middleton just showed once again why she is seen as the most down to earth royal. The Princess of Wales surprised many when she arrived at Windsor Castle by driving herself to a royal engagement instead of using a chauffeured car. She was seen stepping out from the driver’s seat closing the door herself and picking up an umbrella as rain fell outside the castle gates.

The moment quickly went viral with fans praising her calm confident and relatable approach. Senior royals are usually escorted with heavy security but Kate had a simple reason for going solo as her home is only minutes away. She lives around three and a half miles from Windsor Castle at Forest Lodge in windsor great park where she moved with Prince William and their children in october 2025.

This marked Kate’s first solo royal engagement of 2026 where she hosted a reception for England Women’s Rugby team the Red Roses after their World Cup win. As patron of the team she warmly congratulated the players and even joked that rugby games at home are getting risky now that Prince George is getting stronger saying she does not want to be tackled by him.

After years of family tension and health challenges including her cancer diagnosis Kate appears confident relaxed and fully in control. Driving herself hosting solo and charming everyone in the room she proved she is truly back and very much in the driver’s seat.
