Angela Ciccia, PhD, discusses the significance of ASHFoundation funding on her career development and her research in treatment of brain injury.
TRANSCRIPT
Angela Ciccia:
"I have received two ASHFoundation grants at two very important times of my career, one as a doctoral student, and the other as a new investigator, as a new faculty member. In the first grant I was given money to be able to create a new paradigm to use in functional imaging that was much more real life, much more like what would happen in the therapy room. And the Foundation money allowed me to do that, and from there I was able to run it on a group of normal participants and finish my dissertation. That allowed me to get a faculty position, and then the ASHFoundation Investigator Award allowed me to make some changes to that, and then run that same paradigm with a group of teenagers with brain injury, which from there has set up other projects, collaborations, papers, grants.
For me, the significance of Foundation funding was that I was able to do something that I wanted to do, that I felt was significant, both for the patients and for the field, that was very expensive. And without having a lot of money to pay for scan time and physicists, and this team of people that you need to do imaging work, I really would not have been able to do it. The ASHFoundation funding has allowed me to look into the brains of these kids with brain injury, to see what is not working correctly, or what's working differently after the brain injury. By knowing that, we're able to improve our treatment, whether it be behavioral treatment that the speech-language pathologist would do, or pharmaceutical treatment that physicians might decide is appropriate, given what's happening in the brain, after the brain injury. So the significance of doing imaging work after brain injury has quite a possible impact on effective intervention on both sides.
ASHFoundation funding gives you a place to go when you have a new idea, when you're ready to start something new, when it might be something that you're not sure is going to work but if it does work could really make a big difference. And in order to go ahead and get those larger funding opportunities, you have to have data, and Foundation funding is a way to get that. The ASHFoundation money specifically is a group of people that understand what we do as a profession, and can see the importance of the project very early on, whereas even other foundations that you might apply to, they might not truly appreciate the potential significance, just because of their familiarity with the field. So the Foundation money is really crucial in that way."
