It’s been a long journey getting to this point starting with a 4 month back injury last fall to a shin splint, left hip discomfort & right Achilles pain in training leading up to race day. I really doubted myself whether I could complete this marathon especially since I’m prone to injury & cramping. Up to this point, I had only ran 15 miles as the longest distance for training so anything past that would be uncharted territory. Race day itself, I didn’t have the greatest sleep & we also drove up 6 hrs the day before too (crazy I know). What a beautiful course & great weather! However, the conditions were BRUTAL. Record breaking winds for the first time in two decades. I couldn’t breathe at certain points bc running against the wind, I felt like I was drowning. I had to shield my mouth & nose with my hat to breath. Leading up to the 20 mile mark, I got bilateral thigh cramps & went down for 5 mins. The course marshal gave me calcium supplements & electrolytes, then asked if I wanted to be shuttled to the finish line. I said, “I think I’m going to try to keep going.” I’ve come so far already, I ain’t getting shuttled again. The last 5 miles were a battle to get to the end bc I really wanted that medal. In under 6 hrs, I finally crossed the finish line & got to celebrate with my sister & friends. I have to thank God for miraculously healing me from my prior pains & for carrying me through the race despite the circumstances. I want to also thank my cheer squad who came along this trip with me, to my friends who helped me train, & to everyone else who kept me in their prayers. I couldn’t have done it without you all🤍 FIRST MARATHON COMPLETE!!
