According to Japan's Kyodo News, China is considering tripling its nuclear warhead stockpile to 900 by 2035 in light of tensions on Taiwan.

The publication claimed, citing Chinese sources, that the People's Liberation Army's plans had been approved by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The current strategy calls for increasing the number of nuclear warheads to 550 by 2027, and then to 900 by 2035.

Notably, this is not the first time that China's nuclear ambitions have been the subject of speculation.
A Pentagon report from the previous year suggested that China intended to increase its stockpile of nuclear warheads to 1,500.

"The Department of Defense estimates that China's operational nuclear warheads stockpile has exceeded 400," the report stated.
China "will likely field a stockpile of approximately 1,500 warheads" by 2035 if the pace at which it develops nuclear weapons is maintained.

Beijing has kept a close eye on what's going on in Russia, and it has noticed that Moscow's strong nuclear deterrence policy has stopped the US and NATO from opening a war front.

Russia holds the record for the most nuclear warheads at any given time. According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, it has 5,977 warheads, while the United States comes in second place with 5,428 warheads.
