The original version of “You Are Not Alone” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on August 29th, 2020. It was unknown this version existed.

Although fans are familiar with the final version that was released on the HIStory album, it has been revealed that “You Are Not Alone” was originally written & recorded as far back as 1982. Which would mean R. Kelly did not write or compose the song after all. This version, along with demos such as Slapstick, Hot Street, Got The Hots, She’s Trouble, etc were some of many he had been working on during the Thriller sessions.

Although Michael liked it, he wasn’t satisfied, neither was Quincy Jones. They felt the idea of “You Are Not Alone” would fit better in a different time, so he scrapped it. Then he made a new song with the same drums, similar instrumentation & ending for Slapstick (later on evolved into Hot Street), which was considered to be put onto the Thriller album, but ultimately was scrapped. He would revisit the concept of “You Are Not Alone” later on in his career for the HIStory album.

It is unclear what inspired him to write the song. But this version was produced by Michael himself, along with Quincy Jones & Rod Temperton. Later on when he would revisit “You Are Not Alone” in November of 1994, he would have upcoming singer-songwriter R. Kelly produce the version that is on the HIStory album.
