HMS Sheffield is an interesting case. Her predecessor, of Second World War fame, lived through a terrible conflict. Her successor, the first Type 42 destroyer, was far less fortunate. Lost in her first taste of actual combat, and in one of the more unfortunate sinkings in history.

Even on the face of it, the sinking is unfortunate. Lost to a French-made anti-ship missile, when she was an anti-air defense ship. Sailing in close formation with other British warships.

Later declassified documents turn the situation from 'unfortunate' to 'embarrassing' depending on how much stock you put in them. From an incompetent air warfare officer, to failures up and down the chain of command.

It's not a pretty sight, regardless.
