FIRST HALF

The game started out well on UT's first offensive series with the powerful arm of Richard Walton hitting Derek Lewis and Wane McGarity, Ricky had a nice run or two. Then UCLA sacked Walton (probably because Ricky lined up in the slot), there was a long bomb dropped by Wane (but immaterial since UT had a penalty) and UT punted. UCLA followed that up by marching to a TD, surprisingly manhandling a DL that had Casey Hampton, Cedric Woodard and Chris Akins. 7-0 UCLA

On the next possession, Wane again drops a long pass, but again immaterial due to a UT penalty. UT punts, UCLA marches down but UT's defense is better and they only get a FG. 10-0 UCLA

Next series, Wane redeems himself with 2 nice catches, Ricky gets no blocking on a screen, then Walton fumbles after about a 20 yard dropback. UCLA quickly converts with a TD pass to Skip Hicks who drags a UT DB for about 7 yards. 17-0 UCLA

Next series, Walton throws an INT which goes to inside the Texas 5. They get a TD pass, 24-0 UCLA. Scored 14 points in 15 seconds.

Marty Cherry replaced Walton at the beginning of the second quarter and had some nice throws, which included another drop by Wane. Then the UCLA DB cut off the route and picked off a sideline pass. UCLA does a Nebraska roll left on UT with a dumpoff to the TE on 3rd and 1 for a long gain. Cade McNown with his 4th TD pass. 31-0 UCLA

Wane has a good 40 yard KO return but Cherry fumbles and UCLA recovers on the UT 19. McNown gets his 5th TD pass. 38-0 UCLA

Texas does a 2 minute drill with Wane and Ricky until a perfect pass bounces off Wane's hands for a UCLA INT. UCLA drives down but a lucky penalty saves another TD to a wide open WR as they had an illegal motion.

Halftime 38-0 UCLA.
