Bijli Mahadev temple is one of the most popular destinations in the Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh. It attracts both the devotees and the nature lovers.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple, which is one of the oldest in the valley, is located at an altitude of around 2300 meters.
The temple gets its name from the fact that lightning hits this 60-feet wooden pole and the Shiv Ling inside the temple every 12 or so years. The broken pieces of the Shiv Ling are put together by the temple priest using home-made butter collected from the nearby villages.
But according to locals, lightning has not struck this place ever since a cellular tower was built here.
The other reason why this place is so popular is because of the absolutely stunning views of snow-capped mountains this place offers. You also get a 360-degree views of Kullu and Parvati valleys from the top here.
And of course, this one. This is Bhuntar town down below. You can see the airstrip of the Bhuntar airport by the Beas river. It’s a view not to be missed.
To reach here there are three routes. One is from the Naggar side, which is more of a trek. The other is from the Kasol side via Bharain village and the third is from the Kullu side which we took recently.
The road to Bijli Mahadev starts from Ramshila village, which is on the left bank of Kullu. The road condition is really bad and becomes worse during rains.
This 22-km road ends at Gobha village. From here to Bijli Mahadev, it’s a short trek of less than an hour. The trek goes through a beautiful Deodar forest. On our way we got company of two local villagers.
The best time to visit this place is between April and June and September and November when there are less rains and no snow.
