Born with Swimmer Syndrome, this tiny kitten’s back legs have become practically useless as loose joints and ligaments cause them to splay out on either side of his tiny body. Forced to drag himself around, we are doing everything we can to help this baby become fully mobile.

Most cats have the reputation of being not the biggest fans of water, but our newest medical intake kitten has recently been diagnosed with Swimmer Syndrome. Unfortunately, this 8-week-old kitten isn’t actually a little swimmer. This little baby was born with a congenital condition in which the ligaments in his back legs did not tighten as they should have shortly after his birth. As a result, this tiny boy’s back legs splay out on either side of his body. Because this little guy didn’t receive early intervention, which usually happens at around 3 weeks of age, he is still unable to use his back legs properly. Despite his disability, this little kitten is determined to get around, using his two front legs to drag his body from place to place. After consulting with our vet, we were thrilled to learn that all hope of walking was not lost for this sweet boy! With extensive physical therapy, including daily exercises and stretching, and splinting his legs, we are hopeful we will be able to help this little boy gain mobility.

Our little swimmer boy is currently with one of our dedicated medical fosters who will be helping him strengthen his back legs and improve their function over the next several weeks. We do not yet know how much mobility this little boy will regain, or even if his back legs will ever be fully functional. What we do know is that he is the sweetest little man, and he is working so hard to get stronger!
