One of history's greatest ironies occurred during the destruction of Nineveh in 612 BCE. When Median and Babylonian forces set fire to Ashurbanipal's library, they intended to obliterate Assyrian culture completely. However, the library's contents were inscribed on clay tablets, which require high-temperature firing to achieve permanent hardness. The intense heat from the burning palace accidentally transformed fragile, unfired clay tablets into virtually indestructible ceramic artifacts. While the building collapsed, burying the tablets under forty feet of debris, the tablets themselves survived in remarkably preserved condition. When archaeologists excavated the site in the 1840s, they discovered approximately thirty thousand tablets containing everything from the Epic of Gilgamesh to medical texts and astronomical observations. The very act meant to destroy this knowledge ensured its survival for over two millennia, making it one of archaeology's most fortunate accidents.
