Today, on my mama's birthday, Selim and I decided to do a ghazal jam and share one of her favorite ghazals - mera dard nagma-e-besada, originally sung by Madhurani ji and Urdu poetry by Faiz Ahmad Faiz ji. I was listening to this ghazal together with my mama since 1995 when it was released and sometimes I sang it to her during my childhood years.

Ghazal singing is a genre that has been innate to me since I was born and grew around it and a major credit for this goes to my mama. It is also a blessing to have found a partner like Selim in this lifetime, who loves the genre alike and so promptly and beautifully adapts to the guitar-playing style of a ghazal, in just a day. We are calling this a Christmas ghazal, somehow the melody fades into a Christmas carol pretty well that we stage around Christmas time. Do let us know in the comments if you hear it too. 😉

Some info: A ghazal is a genre in Hindustani semi-classical/ light classical music that makes beautiful use of Urdu and Persian poetry. That being said, Arabic speakers will also hear a lot of familiar words there. :)

Ghazals were a big thing in India back in the 90s and by now they are sadly a dying genre. We are in love with this genre and you shall hear some more of it from us in the times to come.

P.S. I don't know what I am playing on the bass but I hear it, so I play it. Slowly getting to learning this instrument.
