On a lazy Sunday afternoon, I finally got around to adding guitar to the drum and bass videos I did of this a few months ago (drums on CrappyAssDrummer channel, bass on CrummyMusician channel) and finishing this drum/"bass"/guitar cover of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. This is an easy song to play on all the instruments involved, but a bit of fun without spending too much time practicing.

Some notes on how I played it:

Top guitar: Fender Stratocaster "partscaster" built in the last couple of years in Jogjakarta. The neck is Fender Japan bird's-eye maple and I have no clue about the rest. But it looks great and sounds OK too, I think.

Rhythm part: Custom sound on a Boss GT-10 (crunchy), USB straight in to the computer. I am NOT using an open A tuning like Jack White did, but I did tune down the A string to G. This allows for a bar across the middle four strings rather than power chords, much easier to play and to slide with a finger. I tried it with an actual slide too, but it sounded awful, so I'll have to practice that more. This guy does a good version with a slide:    • Видео   Wish I got a bit more feedback after the solo.

Solo: Again, I am not using a slide since I tried and I sounded like crap. Instead I tried to accomplish something similar by using bends. Although you can only see one of me playing it, it's actually doubled -- I played it twice and layered the tracks. I think it sounds pretty cool, but some purists will leave comments saying "why does nobody play this with a slide???" I'm sure. Whatever. Custom sound on a Boss GT-10 (overdrive) again. I have used the same sound to play Metallica from time to time funnily, but I like how it sounds here, so there you have it.

"Bass": Like Jack White in the original, I am using a guitar instead of a bass and the Boss GT-10 octave effect to lower the sound one octave (12 steps). Boss GT-10 guitar effects processor USB into computer, custom sound. It's relatively clean, octaved down, with a tiny bit of fuzz, top end equalized down, a bit of delay, chorus, and reverb, two noise suppressors in sequence, and modelling for a '59 Marshall amp. The guitar is homemade in Indonesia. As far as I can tell, it combines the body and neck of a cheap Ibanez Geo, G&B pickups, a cheap double locking tremolo system that I have blocked with wood blocks since it sucked, and a fingerboard by some local guy here in Indonesia who apparently likes Slipknot a lot, since the end result looks very much like an Ibanez MTM1, but at about 15% of the price. Anyway, not a great guitar at all, but with the SEVEN on the neck, it seemed appropriate for this song!

Drums: It's all about the quarter notes. Roland TD-4KX straight to computer soundcard.

Sound software: Sonar 8 Producer's Edition

Video software: Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 11

Camera: Samsung PL170 sitting on my desk

Computer: I finally got a new one! Acer Predator i5
