Liber Pater, the 'Free Father' is a Roman god who has become so entangled with Dionysus and Bacchus it can be hard to see him clearly. In this episode, we explore his liberating world of the vine. In order to see him more clearly, we will try to disambiguate him from Dionysus and Bacchus, looking past all the points of contact to those places where he is distinct and very different.

Our fourth and final deity of sustenance brings all the bounty of the grapes and harvest, but around the edges he also slips into dissolution - and that is where we'll head in the next episode.

This is the seventeenth in an ancient history series that explores Roman religion behind the veil of Greek mythology. Each episode focuses on a different indigenous Roman god.
