The ALGOWOOD was moved from the west side, to the east side, of the Welland Canal, to be tied off in front of the Port Weller drydock, at Lock 1 of the Welland Canal, Dec.24, 2012. The coast guard ship AMUNDSEN is already inside the drydock in the distance. Three tugs pulled the ship sideways from one side of the canal to the other. The tug MOLLY M 1 was handling ALGOWOOD's stern; the tug LAC MANITOBA was pushing along midship; and the tug ECOSSE was at the bow.
Just after ALGOWOOD was tied off, the downbound (northbound) FEDERAL NAKAGAWA passed by. She gave a nice master's salute horn blast (around 14:20) as she entered Lock 1, while the three tugs were tying up for the night in front of the drydock.
The ALGOWOOD was ready to be manoeuvred, stern first, into the drydock for maintenance, while the canal closes down for the winter. (The canal closing is scheduled for Dec.26, 2012, with all ships to leave the canal by Dec.30, 2012)
At 10:00 the propeller from the Misener ship JOHN O. McKELLER can be seen, laying in the grass. The JOHN O. McKELLER was the flagship of the Colonial Steamship Line, built here right in Niagara, across the canal at the Port Weller Drydocks, and was christened at a canal-side ceremony here on Aug.27, 1952. At 678 feet long, this ship at the time was the largest ever built in Canada. It could carry 750,000 bushels of wheat, or 23,000 tons of ore. It was built in anticipation of, and to take advantage of, the still-under-construction St. Lawrence Seaway. About 1984, the ship became the Parrish & Heimbecker line's ELMGLEN; around 2000 the hull was converted to a floating dock.
