Majek Fashek inna New York

I will never forget the day we shot this video. It was the last video I ever made with my partner, Stafford Ashani (R.I.P), with the great Majek Fashek (R.I.P) and it includes shots of the World Trade Center (R.I.P). Even King Pago is now resting in peace.

The shoot was a grueling experience for me, although everyone else was having great fun. It was a big challenge to shoot everything in one day and make it down to the Liberty Island Ferry before we lost daylight. "Come on people--we have to move!" As the producer, I was under great duress for a number of reasons, and I will never forget Majek's sensitivity during the shoot. At one point in that high stress day, after we'd finished a scene, he called me, "Diane, come here. You are riding with me", and he insisted I get in his car to take a breather while he drove the two of us to the next location. "Are you alright? Relax for a few minutes." People seem to remember Majek for his troubles, but I will always remember him for his kindness and joy.

I hope this video will remind people of what a delightful and prophetic artist Majek was and of how lucky we were to have him with us on our journey.

Exteriors shot on location in NYC in 1991..some gone and others changed now in 2021: the UN, 72nd & Broadway, Times Square, Central Park/Columbus Circle, and of course, the Liberty Island ferry :(. The concert was filmed at Kilimanjaro, NYC, in November, 1990.
