Responding to a question regarding the relevance of the United Nations during a time of multiple global conflicts, Indian politician and author Shashi Tharoor explained that, as the international body's effectiveness depends on member states' ability to agree, there would inevitably be cases wherein operational paralysis occurs.

Noting the UN's past successes, Tharoor argued that current Secretary General Antonio Guterres should have taken inspiration from his predecessor Kofi Annan and undertaken more proactive actions to prevent escalation between Russia and Ukraine.

Regardless, he concluded that, although Ukraine and Gaza have witnessed more failures than successes when it comes to international intervention, there will be future conflicts wherein bodies like the UN will come in handy.
