Changes around Us
Reversible and irreversible changes
Reversible changes – The changes that can be reversed by reversing the action or
changing the conditions
Example: freezing of water, boiling of water etc.
Irreversible changes – The changes that cannot be reversed even after bringing
about changes in the conditions.
Example: rusting of iron, cooking of vegetables etc.
Physical and chemical changes
Physical change – A change which occurs in the physical nature or physical form of a
substance and not its chemical identity.
 No new substances are formed
 They are usually reversible
 Example: boiling of water, melting of ice, crushing of chalk, tearing a paper etc.
Chemical change – A change in the chemical identity of a substance.
 One or more new substances are formed
 They are irreversible
 Example: burning of matchstick, cooking of rice are chemical changes etc.

No new substance or product is formed. A new substance or product is formed
always.
Change in only physical aspects of matter
like shape, size, etc.
Change is chemical properties of matter
eg burning of wax
It can be easily reversed.
For eg – ice into vapours
It is an irreversible change.
For eg – cooking, burning etc.
No effect on chemical bonds of atoms or
molecules of a substance
These changes have direct effect on
chemical bonds of molecules of
substances.
Doe not produces energy during the
process.
Produces energy during the process in
terms of heat, sound and light.
The composition of matter does not
change.

Other ways to bring about a change
There are other ways by which changes occur in a substance:
Mixing two substances together
 A small amount of curd is added to warm milk to convert milk into curd.
 This is an irreversible change.
 Adding salt to water makes it salty but this is a reversible change.
Expansion and Contraction
 When metals are heated, they expand or increase in size
 Cooling it down makes it contract again or decrease in size, giving back its original size
