Huey Pierce Long (1893-1935) was a populist and progressive governor and senator from Louisiana, and arguably the greatest figure in the state’s history. Long’s administration built thousands of miles of new roads, provided free textbooks and additional funding for schools, expanded Louisiana State University to an A class university, modernized and expanded the state’s charity hospital system, and shifted the tax burden from the poor to the rich. As Senator, he regarded the New Deal as too moderate and proposed his alternative “Share Our Wealth” program. Long was assassinated in 1935 during an incident with Carl Weiss, the son-in-law of a political opponent.

Randy Newman (1943) is an American song writer known for his piano, soft jazz, and soul style, as well as making movie scores, most notably the score for Toy Story. In 1974 he released “Good Old Boys”, a concept album about the American South, its history, its inhabitants, and the varying perspectives on the region. Track 8 on the album is titled “Kingfish” and describes the governorship of Huey Long from the perspective of a rural citizen.
