Welcome to the ultimate Borderlands 3 challenge run you didn’t know you needed. In a game notorious for showering players with endless Legendaries, overpowered loot, and god-tier weapons that turn even the deadliest bosses into punching bags, what happens when you take it all away? Today, we’re about to find out.

In this video, I’ll be attempting to beat Borderlands 3 from start to finish without using a single Legendary weapon, shield, grenade mod, class mod, or artifact. That’s right — no Yellowcake, no Monarch, no Plasma Coil, no Transformer shield, no Fl4k Cosmic Stalker, nothing orange whatsoever. Only purple gear and below. No uniques. No mission-exclusive items. Just the core, forgotten loot pool of blues, purples, and maybe a desperate green drop here and there.

Why do this? Because if you’ve played Borderlands 3 at all, you already know how quickly it throws Legendaries at you, especially on Mayhem Modes. It’s gotten to the point where Legendaries don’t feel legendary anymore. Every miniboss, every boss, every named enemy feels like a slot machine, and by the time you hit Mayhem 10, you can pick up a full inventory of orange drops in a single run. The game’s balance has been completely warped by its own generosity, making the rest of the loot pool — and most of the skill trees — irrelevant once you’ve got a top-tier gun in your hands.

That’s where this challenge comes in. Inspired by the upcoming Borderlands 4 and what I hope Gearbox will learn from BL3’s loot system, I wanted to see what Borderlands 3 actually feels like when you strip away the crutch of Legendaries. Could you still beat the game’s story? Could you survive Mayhem Mode? Could you handle Takedowns, Proving Grounds, and the Eridian Slaughter without all those overpowered weapons? Could you rely on your build, skill choices, and situational awareness instead of just pulling the trigger on a Plaguebearer and watching everything explode?

In this long-form video, you’ll see exactly what that journey looks like. From the earliest moments on Pandora, scraping by with low-rarity pistols and scavenged blue SMGs, to finally taking down Wotan the Invincible using nothing but purple gear. I’ll cover the entire experience — the good, the bad, and the brutally difficult moments when I wondered what I’d gotten myself into.

We’ll go over my character choice, skill tree builds, Mayhem modifier strategies, and the unexpected MVP weapons that actually turned out to be surprisingly viable, even without an orange rarity beam attached. You’ll see which purple guns still slap, which shields can clutch out a fight, and how to make the most of a heavily limited arsenal.

Using purple-only weapons in the Eridian Proving Grounds and Eridian Slaughter arenas

A final boss fight against Tyreen Calypso with nothing but purple and blue gear

And of course — Wotan the Invincible, arguably Borderlands 3’s biggest test of any build, taken down without a single Legendary weapon, grenade, or artifact
