Research metrics are measures used to quantify or calculate the impact and prestige of scholarly publications within a discipline and, by extension, a scholar's academic value. Research journal metrics are used by academics to decide where to publish or who to collaborate with and they may influence funding or promotion decisions. This session will help explain the uses and limitations of some of the more common research bibliometrics, such as Journal Impact Factor, citation analysis, h-index and the alternative metrics (Altmetrics) which track and analyze scholarship through social media.
