Richard Tyler Jr. (known as URAEUS in creative circles) is an award-winning visual artist and storyteller. A graduate of Quince Orchard High School (Class of 1992), he went on to earn a degree in Illustration and Design from Morgan State University’s Fine Arts Program, where he distinguished himself as a leading creative voice.

Over the past two decades, he has built a career as a freelance designer, publisher, and art director, with a reputation for innovative and socially conscious storytelling. He currently serves as Chief Creative Officer for Knarrative, the socioeducational platform founded by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Karen Hunter.

URAEUS is the creator of Jaycen Wise, described in Black Comix: African American Independent Comics Art and Culture (Random House) as “an icon of Black comics.” He is also the creator of Indigo: Essence of the Assassin, currently in development with Wesley Snipes' Maandi Media, and Morien: Monster Hunter.

BLACK HEROES MATTER (BHM) URAEUS is also the founder of Black Heroes Matter (BHM), a label and viral movement that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016. Its roots, however, extend back decades through the independent Black comics community.

Black Heroes Matter is both a declaration and a paradigm shift: Black creators across comics, animation, literature, television, and film have stories worth telling, and those stories deserve to be centered in popular culture. The movement responds directly to ongoing racial and sociopolitical issues in the United States. Its message is simple: Black heroes matter.
