Ambient for Airports is a classic album. The whole thing was made using a series of tape loops, all with different lengths, randomly intersecting with each other. They had the tape wrapped around chairs, with lengths up to seventy or eighty feet long.

We can shortcut the process with modern tech. In a DAW we can use snippets of audio and duplicate the length to recreate quickly and easily what Brian Eno did.

The art of the original was absolutely in doing something that nobody else had done. It was a huge undertaking to make all of these loops and record the results. A real project. This project in particular rings true to Brain Eno’s own description of himself as more of a conceptual artist than a musician. It is analytical to a point, before it lets the gods of chance play their part.

As Brian said in the liner notes:

‘Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.’
