STORYLINE:
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered on Wednesday in Rome's Piazza della Repubblica to protest against the war policies of the United States as President George W. Bush landed in the city for an official visit.
Bush, coming from Germany, arrived at Rome's Ciampino airport on Wednesday afternoon.
He headed, by motorcade, toward the US ambassador's residence in an upscale Rome neighbourhood.
While Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the Vatican prepare to roll out the red carpet, radical leftists, anti-war activists and thousands of other demonstrators are expected to march through the streets of the Italian capital on Wednesday to protest against the visit.
Thousands of policemen have been deployed as part of a tight security plan that also includes a ban on commercial flights over the city during Bush's stay and the rerouting of dozens of bus and tram lines.
"We demonstrate against the government of the United States and its war policies, its social, military and environmental crimes around the world but also against the Italian centre-right government which, as the former centre-left one, is allied with the US one, and thus co-responsible of such policy," said Marco Ferrando, a member of the Communist Party of the Workers who was protesting on Wednesday.
Berlusconi, currently in his third stint in power, has established himself as one of Bush's staunchest supporters in Europe.
He once famously said he agreed with the United States regardless of its position - and with the like-minded Bush, relations are especially strong.
Last year, when Bush came to Rome and met with then-Premier Romano Prodi, he also found time to meet privately with Berlusconi.
Defying strong domestic opposition, Berlusconi sent some three-thousand troops to Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, in what was at one point the coalition's third-largest contingent.
The troops have since been withdrawn.
The Italian leader has ruled out sending troops to Iraq but during talks with Bush on Thursday he will discuss possibly easing restrictions over the use of Italian soldiers in Afghanistan, Berlusconi's office said.
Also on the agenda is Iran and the standoff over its nuclear programme, officials said.
Italy is pushing to become part of a group of negotiators with Tehran that includes the five permanent Security Council members plus Germany.
Bush will also have private talks with Pope Benedict XVI on Friday before departing for Paris to continue his farewell European tour.
