AME Podcast #21 – Gavin Webb, PhD, Ignite your Artistic Dedication (09/17/24)

In our twenty-first AME Podcast, we continue our quest to serve artistic excellence through a conversation with Dr. Gavin Webb, PhD, percussionist, music lecturer, international education professional, ethnomusicologist, and dean of international programs. Gavin began his music interest through the influence of popular music, which provided motivation to become a musician and perform popular covers on a drumkit. As music making became an identity for Gavin, his interests shifted to learning music in different varieties outside of what we call the Western Music Cannon where music learning is only focused through the classics of the European culture. For Gavin, he wanted to learn music traditions throughout the world focusing on international music traditions so he could participate. Through his experiences in Ghana, Gavin wanted to be immersed in the community to understand the African Diaspora, the worldwide collection of communities descended from the African heritage. Thus, Gavin took the time to master the traditions in depth so he could understand the culture interactions and observe the musician motivations inspired by deep artistic passion and dedication to the community. Learning the traditional skills brought Gavin a way to step outside his comfort zone to understand the influence of what music making can provide. For Gavin, his focus on ethnomusicology has brought him a journey he had no idea he would begin at a younger age.
