NC: Proposal introduced to relocate E.E. Smith High School

E. E. Smith High School is currently located at 1800 Seabrook Road in Fayetteville. School leaders are looking to put a new school on a new piece of land almost twice the size, at the intersection of Honeycutt Road and Parham Boulevard. Parents and school leaders have talked about replacing the current E.E. Smith High for years. In February 2022, Associate Superintendent of Auxiliary Services Joe Desormaux said it would cost close to $90 million to replace the school. The cost is expected to cost more than $100 million now.
"It's a pretty good school," one student said. "It needs a lot of upgrades though."

"I think it should be done," the student's mom said.

School leaders and community members have pointed out the student needs have outgrown the current campus.

"They need to be able to spread out a little bit more," said Associate Superintendent Kevin Coleman.

Coleman said plans are still in the early stages, but the district has begun to identify a possible new home: land owned by Fort Bragg, which would give the school about 90 acres of space. School leaders are looking to put a new school on a new piece of land almost twice the size, at the intersection of Honeycutt Road and Parham Boulevard.
"We would be able to lease that land from Fort Bragg and build a school on that," Coleman said. "It would be outside of the gates."
Coleman said district leaders are keeping a close eye on other school projects around the state, and the current price tag for a new E.E. Smith is in line with what other districts are paying. He said the district still has to secure funding, hire an architect and begin construction.
While the project is moving forwad, Coleman said will be at least two years before students see the changes.
