Steven Furtick’s ministry model feels a lot like Naaman’s pride problem in 2nd Kings chapter 5—grand entrances, entourage, big racket and all—except instead of leprosy, it’s a terminal case of spotlight addiction. Naaman had to learn that healing comes not by self-promotion but by humility and obedience to God’s word. Elijah wouldn’t even step outside to greet the great general, because he knew the glory belonged to God alone, not himself. Contrast that with modern preachers strutting around in designer hoodies and gold chains, as if the pulpit or lectern was just a prop for a night club act. But even so, when the gospel is preached, even with bombastic speech and selfish ambition thinly vailed as boldness, God can still use it to save His elect. Yes, folks come to Christ under Furtick’s ministry—not because of his stagecraft, but in spite of it. The trouble is, Elijah refused gifts so God alone would shine, while today’s celebrity pastors cash checks bigger than Naaman’s treasure chest. In the end, any preacher who blocks the view of the Son with their own shadow is standing in the way of the only glory that matters.
