Exactly 75 years ago, a visionary leader proposed to bring Europe together. The Schuman Declaration was the first step towards our European Union. And it was the beginning of the longest era of peace and prosperity in our history. Today, even in times of global uncertainty, Europe remains an anchor of stability in a changing world.
We are a unique democracy of 27 countries and 450 million people. We have a solid and dynamic economy, but also clean air, free schools, and free speech for all. We live longer and healthier lives than anywhere else in the world. And we are so attractive that 12 countries are on the waiting list to join our union.
75 years after the Schuman Declaration, Europe is more than a union. It is our home and we can be proud of it. So long live Europe and happy Europe Day.
