It’s a question a good friend of mine asked recently. He’d just asked his girlfriend to marry him, and the ring she liked was for sale on an Etsy site and apparently shipped from Hong Kong.

Being asked my opinion on such matters is not an infrequent occurrence. As a person tied to the world of gems and jewelry, I’m often asked for my input when it comes to the jewelry purchases of my friends and family members. And since an engagement ring is usually the most “major” jewelry purchase a person makes in his life, and it’s also one of the most common, most people want to talk to someone who knows more than they do about it. Someone they trust and who will give an honest answer.

Enter, me.

Now, answering my friend’s question requires a bit of a deep dive into the wider subject it addresses. That of buying engagement rings online. Because to many people, even hearing the question my friend asked causes them to physically recoil in disgust and utter horror. Buying an engagement ring online? The very idea!

I’m not here to try and make fools of the brick and mortar allegiant or to convince them of the error in their ways. (Because if you want to know a secret, I am one of the brick and mortar allegiant.) But what even online engagement ring nay-sayers must admit is that the game has essentially changed. The traditional diamond selling process has been turned on its head in recent years, shifting vastly away from the typical experience an engagement ring shopper might have in a jewelry store. It’s not brick and mortar verses this one guy in his garage selling shoddy imitation diamonds on a poorly-designed website. It’s brick and mortar vs. Blue Nile, Overstock.com, and many others. And these are not insignificant companies, nor are their online engagement ring businesses insubstantial.

There are disadvantages, whether perceived or actual, to anything, and online nay-sayers will eagerly gripe about the lack of information available when trying to purchase an engagement ring online, the increased likelihood of being swindled or not getting exactly what it is you want, and a general sense of discomfort or unease at not actually getting to see the ring first, and I get it, I do. But let’s take a look at each of these complaints more closely and see if we can’t actually turn them into some of the Pros of online engagement ring shopping.
