About the lecture:

The rise of North America's shale oil and gas production has changed the market dynamics, energy trade flow, and the elements of energy security. Major consuming countries, particularly in Asia, are looking at U.S. energy resources as a more secure source compared to their "traditional" supply regions (e.g., the Middle East) and are eager in diversify their supply sources. This crucial change in trade flows will have geopolitical and political consequences, which will create long-term energy alliances, particularly in the case of natural gas and the LNG trade. For instance, while China's oil imports from the U.S. are growing, Iran's oil exports to China are lessening.

OPEC and non-OPEC oil production cuts have also significantly changed energy trade flows and, more importantly, the balance of light and heavy crude oil supplies in the market. This change in the crude type balance could potentially have a serious impact on refinery margins and profit in the short and medium term and other, perhaps unforeseen, long-term consequences.

In this talk, we will cover the changes in market fundamentals, energy trade flows, energy prices and policies, and their broader impact upon global and regional energy security. We will also touch upon the current political risks treating the oil and gas supply from countries such as Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

About the speaker:

Dr. Sara Vakhshouri is founder and president of SVB Energy International. She is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Atlantic Council's Global Energy Center. She is an internationally recognized expert, and has extensive experience in global energy market studies, energy security, and geopolitical risk with a special focus on the Middle East, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico.

Dr. Vakhshouri has experience working in both the public and private sectors of the Iranian energy industry from 2000 to 2008, including the National Iranian Oil Company.

Dr. Vakhshouri has been based in Washington, D.C. since 2009, where she has advised numerous energy and policy leaders, international corporations, think tanks, investment banks, and law firms on the global energy market, the geopolitics of energy, and investment patterns.
