Vietnam fans are a class act despite team’s Suzuki Cup defeat

"HANOI: Vietnam may have lost the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final but their fans have won a place in the hearts of Malaysians.

Although the temperature at the stadium was a cool 17°C during the second-leg semi-finals on Thursday, the Vietnamese fans won over the Malaysians with their warmth and hospitality.

This was in stark contrast to the uncouth behaviour of Malaysian fans in the first leg at the Shah Alam Stadium last Sunday.

The first-leg match, which ended with Malaysia losing 2-1 to Vietnam, saw a group of Malaysian fans attacking their Vietnamese counterparts.

A Vietnamese fan received outpatient treatment for injuries sustained during the attack and five Malaysian football hooligans were arrested for the assault.

The incident went viral and Vietnamese fans were up in arms following the unprovoked assault on their countrymen.

They posted threats of retaliation on social media and some even hacked the Football Association Malaysia’s (FAM) official website to show their displeasure.

But, surprisingly, the Malaysian team did not face any crowd problems during their training sessions before the match. The hosts, the Vietnam Football Federation, kept their word in ensuring the Malaysian team were given the best facilities to train.

The security at Malaysia’s training sessions was also beefed up, although it was not necessary as the locals seemed more interested in carrying on with their daily life than harass the football players.

Even the Vietnamese media was a class act, focusing on the team’s performance rather than stoking ill-feelings ahead of the match.

On match day, the Vietnamese fans even unfurled a banner proclaiming “Football helps us become friends. Do not do the opposite” at the My Dinh National Stadium.

They stayed true to their word, focusing on cheering their team and respecting the Malaysian national anthem.

About 50 Malaysian fans attended the match and none was harmed – before, during or after the match.

Even after Vietnam conceded four goals, their fans did not turn rowdy. They continued to support and cheer for their players until the final whistle.

Despite the 4-2 loss, the visibly upset Vietnamese fans kept their chin up and dispersed peacefully from the stadium.

The Vietnamese media graciously congratulated their Malaysian counterparts for the win and wished them good luck in the final against Thailand.

Everyone thought that the Vietnamese fans would retaliate against the Malaysian fans over the Shah Alam incident.

Instead, they gave everyone a lesson on respect, humility and friendship.

Well done, Vietnam!"
