Before his Crossroads 2023 appearance, Gary Clark, Jr. was greeted in the Vintage Room at Guitar Center Hollywood by Artist Relations Manager Eric Bradley. The occasion was the fulfillment of a generous mission—selecting an instrument Guitar Center would donate to Eric Clapton’s charity auction to benefit his Crossroads Centre Antigua. Clark, Jr.’s choice of a ’65 Gibson SG Special with P90 pickups surprised Bradley a bit, as the guitarist is known for wielding semi-hollowbody models.

“I like semi-hollow guitars,” says Clark, Jr. as he inspected the walls of vintage beauties. “But every now and then, I want to feel like a rock star by picking up an SG. When I play an SG, it's ‘shred-o’clock.’ It’s go time.”

In the video, Clark, Jr. also expresses what it means to play the Crossroads Guitar Festival, why he digs Fender Princeton amps and his gratitude for the Crossroads Centre. “Life is hard, in general," he says. "So, to be able to reach out and know a place like Crossroads exists—that’s everything. It means a lot.”
