Giacamo shocks derby field winning at 50-1

"LOUISVILLE — Giacomo, a 50-1 long shot, came down the center of the race track and broke away from the pack in the stretch to win Saturday's 131st Kentucky Derby, resulting in the second-greatest payoff in Derby history.

n crossing the finish line a half-length ahead of another 50-1 long shot, Closing Argument, trainer John Shirreffs won his first Derby with his first Derby horse and jockey Mike Smith won his first Derby in his 12th try. The winner paid $102.60 on a $2 wager, in the second-greatest upset in Kentucky Derby history — Donerail paid $184.90 in 1913. Afleet Alex was third.

"I just felt like he could have run all day," said Smith, who was second in last year's Derby with Lion Heart...."
