दिलीप कुमार साहब की 1961 की फिल्म गंगा यमुना एक मिल का पत्थर है। गंगा के किरदार में दिलीप कुमार का प्रदर्शन भारतीय सिनेमा के इतिहास में सबसे बेहतरीन अभिनय प्रदर्शन से एक माना जाता है। यह फिल्म दिलीप साहब की एक मजबूत अभिनय की पाठशाला है।

वह दिलीप साहब ही थे जैसा अवधी भाषा बोलकर, धोती कुर्ता पहनकर उत्तर भारत में हिंदी सिनेमा में सर्वश्रेष्ठ होने का लोहा मनवा लिया था। मैने जब इस फिल्म को देखा था तो दिलीप साहब तो जबरदस्त थे ही। लेकिन मैं हैरान और भी हुआ जब दक्षिण भारतीय बैजयंतीमाला ने अवधी बोलने में उनकी जुबां की एक मात्राएं भी इधर की उधर नही होती हैं। हिंदी सिनेमा के परदे पर कोई अभिनेत्री इनके आस पास नही देखा। इसलिए जहां सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का पुरस्कार दिलीप साहब को मिला तो इस फिल्म में बैजयंतीमाला को इन्हे सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री का फिल्म फेयर पुरस्कार भी मिला जो उचित था। अगर इन्हें यह पुरस्कार बैजयंतीमाला को ना मिला होता तो फिल्म फेयर अवार्ड के इतिहास में बड़ी चूक मानी जाती। जैसे गाईड में म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर एसडी बर्मन को कोई पुरस्कार न दिए जाना। जिस से एक बड़े भेद भाव को जन्म दे दिया।

Hence while Dilip sahab got the award for best actor, in this film, Baijayantimala also got the Filmfare award for best actress, which was appropriate. If Baijayantimala had not got this award, it would have been considered a big mistake in the history of Filmfare award. Like music director SD Burman not being given any award in Guide. This gave birth to a big discrimination. This not only diminished the credibility of the award system, but also reduced the trust.
