Welcome to the Gateway of the High North. My name is Rene, and I’m on a solo 6,500km motorbike expedition tracing the entirety of Vietnam’s land borders. Today, we establish our final staging point in the city of Kon Tum before we leave civilization for the isolated spine of the Trường Sơn.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Kon Tum is the "Soul of the Highlands"—a city defined by its 100-year-old French missionary history and the towering communal houses of the Ba Na (Bahnar) people. This is the official KM 0 for our northern push. Before we tackle the "Ghost Roads" and the Lo Xo Pass, we dive into the architectural marvels that define this highland hub.

In this episode, we explore the Wooden Cathedral (Chính tòa Kon Tum)—a 1913 masterpiece built entirely of wood without a single nail. We navigate the 292-meter Kon Klor Suspension Bridge, enter the sacred Rông House of the Ba Na community, and uncover the history of Emperor Quang Trung (Nguyễn Huệ) and the Tson Tây Dynasty. From the reverse-flow of the Đắk Bla River to the "Rocket Fuel" coffee of the Đắk Hà district, this is the essential 48-hour prep for the most dangerous leg of the mission.

🏍️ RIDER’S INTEL: THE KON TUM STAGING

The "Northern Reset": We are treating Kon Tum as KM 0 because once you leave this city, the road becomes the western "Ghost Branch" of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This is your last chance for high-quality machine parts, major grocery shopping, and reliable internet before you enter the 200km "No Signal" zone toward Khâm Đức and A Lưới.

Navigation: The city is easy to navigate, but the Kon Klor Bridge is only 4.5 meters wide. Be prepared to share the bouncy deck with local motorbikes and agricultural carts—it’s a great test of your balance before the mountain passes.

Machine Check: Use the rest day here to deep-clean your chain and check your oil. The dust of the Central Highlands will have taken its toll, and the Lò Xo Pass (next episode) will demand total mechanical reliability.
