TRINITY — It would be easy to call West Morgan’s 54-14 victory over Colbert Heights Friday night a complete win.

In a Class 3A, Region 8 win over the Wildcats, the West Morgan starters took care of business in the first half, then the reserve units played the final 24 minutes to complete the victory.

West Morgan dominated the first two quarters and led 47-0 at halftime.

“It’s always nice when you get to play all your players,” said West Morgan coach Pierre Coggins. “Not only is that good for morale, but it gets everybody playing experience, which is very important to the whole team.

“It’s also nice to have a game like this going into next week against Colbert County. We may have got to take it easy some tonight, but that all changes now, and our players know it. Everything starts over after tonight.”

The Rebels finished the game with 514 yards of total offense, 351 of which came on the ground.

“Everybody could see that the coaches had us ready to play this game,” said West Morgan quarterback Justin Jones, who completed 9 of 10 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns. “We played with a lot of confidence and stayed focused the whole time.

“Now we have got to stay focused this week in practice for Colbert County. We all know that is going to be a tough game. Colbert County always has a good team and we have to be ready. I’m sure that Coach Coggins will have some kind of surprise for us in practice this week that should have us ready to play.”

Midway through the first quarter, Micah Gholston ran for a 6-yard touchdown to give West Morgan a 7-0 lead. With 1:39 left in the period, Jones threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Terry for the 13-0 lead.

In the second period, Terrance Carter had a 26-yard touchdown run before Jones connected with Michael Wallace for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Desmond Clay then had a 67-yard scoring run before Jared Elms returned an intercepted pass 15 yards for a touchdown.

Jones’ final touchdown pass came on a 12-yard throw to Hunter Rivers for the 47-0 advantage at intermission.

In the third period, Colbert Heights (1-1) made it 47-7 on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Leander Wallace to Colby Borden.

West Morgan quickly retaliated as quarterback Austyn Mason threw a 26-yard touchdown to Chandler Culver to complete the Rebels’ scoring.

Colbert Heights quarterback Jordan Berry threw a 26-yard touchdown pass for the Wildcats’ final score.

Colbert Heights finished the game with 259 yards passing while mustering 31 yards on the ground.
