Pope extends Christmas blessing, calling for accountability regarding violence and injustice
Pope Leo XIV delivered his customary Christmas ‘Urbi et Orbi’ blessing from the central balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica on December 25, 2025.
On Thursday, Pope Leo presented his inaugural official Christmas blessing since his election, emphasizing to the faithful that peace commences with personal transformation, and urging both believers and those in positions of authority to engage in dialogue and reconciliation across all levels.
"Dear sisters and brothers, taking responsibility is the definitive path to peace," the pope stated in his Urbi et Orbi address on Christmas day, December 25.
"If each of us, at every level, could cease blaming others and instead recognize our own shortcomings, seeking God’s forgiveness, and if we genuinely empathized with the suffering of others, standing in solidarity with the vulnerable and marginalized, then the world would transform," he remarked.
Pope Leo commenced the Christmas season with a Christmas Eve vigil Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica on December 24, followed by celebrating Mass on Christmas morning, before delivering the Urbi et Orbi blessing, which is directed "to the city and to the world," and is accompanied by a plenary indulgence, traditionally granted only at Christmas and Easter.
In his address, the pope reflected on the fact that Jesus, the creator of the world, was born in a stable and placed in a manger due to the lack of accommodation at the inn.
"Out of love, he chose to be born of a woman, sharing in our humanity; out of love, he embraced poverty and rejection, aligning himself with those who are marginalized and excluded," Leo expressed.
In the context of Jesus’s birth, he indicated that believers witness God’s choice to perform what only He can accomplish, which is to bear the weight of sin and pave the way to salvation. However, Jesus, through his incarnation, also demonstrates to humanity "what we alone can achieve.
