White Cane Basics: Choosing a White Cane. Anyone experiencing vision loss should explore using a white cane. When used properly, a white cane will help with: Detecting curbs, steps, drop offs or obstacles. Provide tactile feedback on surfaces. Communicate to others that you are experiencing vision loss.

First, chose your size: do this by measuring from the armpit to the floor with shoes on. This length will create an appropriate distance from your hand to the floor while walking.
Jane is standing next to her cane. It is the same length as the height of her armpit from the bottom of her shoe. The cane moves into Jane's hand, the grip rests comfortably in her hand with the tip touching the floor in front of her.
Take some time to explore the various offerings of cane tips, grips, and heaviness to choose the right one for you.
There are several different shaped cane tips: Marshmallow, Ball, Pencil, Glide, Hockey. There are several different types of canes, support cane, identification or ID cane and fold-able white cane.
When you have your cane, extend it in front of your body with the tip touching the floor and the grip in your dominant hand.

It is important to sweep the cane from shoulder to shoulder. Start with the cane in the middle of your body, sweep the cane to the right then when moving it to the left you are able to step out with the right foot since you now know the path is clear. Walking in step with your cane this way will minimize the danger of running into obstacles or falling.

Eventually the white cane provides a sense of confidence, security, and fluid range of independent movement. Enjoy safely exploring your surroundings with your white cane!
