The properties of respiratory gases—primarily oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂)—are fundamental to respiratory physiology, dictating how these gases are transported and exchanged in the body.
Oxygen is essential for cellular respiration and energy production, while carbon dioxide is a metabolic waste product that must be efficiently removed. The partial pressures of these gases (PaO₂ and PaCO₂) drive their diffusion across the alveolar-capillary membrane in the lungs.
Oxygen, with a partial pressure gradient from the alveoli to the blood, diffuses into the pulmonary capillaries, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli due to its higher partial pressure in venous blood. Hemoglobin plays a crucial role in oxygen transport, binding O₂ in the lungs and releasing it in tissues. CO₂ is transported in the blood primarily as bicarbonate ions, with smaller amounts dissolved in plasma and bound to hemoglobin.
Understanding the solubility, partial pressures, and transport mechanisms of these gases is vital for diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions and optimizing ventilatory support.
